Největší nacistický koncentrační a vyhlazovací tábor vybavený plynovými komorami, do něhož směřovaly transporty z celé Evropy.

Město bylo založeno na konci 18. století jako vojenská pevnost a nazváno po císařovně Marii Terezii. V listopadu 1941 v něm bylo zřízeno ghetto pro Židy z českých zemí, z Německa, z Rakouska, z Nizozemí, z Dánska, ze Slovenska a z dalších okupovaných zemí. Přímo v Terezíně zahynulo přes 30 tisíc vězňů, dalších téměr 90 tisíc bylo odtud posláno do vyhlazovacích táborů na východě.
